Yesterday’s Pupil Interview

Yesterday's PupilPeach Van Pletzen AKA Yesterday’s Pupil has just released two tracks off his latest album for free online. We chatted to him about the new album, the new video and more. Check it out!

What can people expect from your second album?
From the album is a whole people could expect a lot of different things.  It is a diverse collection of songs and it does not stick to any one genre.

You’ve chosen a unique way to release the new album (5 parts consisting of 2 singles each available for free download 2 months apart) Why did you choose to do things in this way?
Because it is free it would be silly to do it all in one go.  The download will be rather large, secondly people will miss out on some songs, and lastly people can’t handle it all at once.  hahaha, I want people to follow the releases / parts like a little series.

Who was responsible for the awesome artwork for the first two tracks and what was their brief?
Louis Minnaar.  I gave him some tracks, and a long explanation of the themes and concepts.

Tell us a bit about your experience filming the video for “Too Tired to Disco”
It was such a funny shoot.  We laughed a lot.  I think the behind the scenes for that video would be classic.  I almost fell off the bike a few times, Louis almost fell from the bakkie he was tied to with a steady-cam a few times.  It is a funny thing trying to ride a bike and singing in sync while a bunch of sexual predators are watching you from their fancy cars at Fort Klapperkop. dang!

In what ways have you evolved as a musician since your first album “Errors of Enthusiasm”?
In every way possible.  I have learned so much in the last three years about songwriting, production, drumming, recording, mixing and the industry… so I suppose all that comes into play when I create something now.

You are a producer and are continually working on numerous projects as well as playing live as Yesterday’s Pupil and with other artists. How do you keep the creative juices flowing with such a hectic schedule?
I don’t.  But when it flows I make the most of it.  You can’t possibly ever flow with creativity 24/7, sometimes you are just a blank hungry human, but the key is that when you are going through a creative stage to cash in on it and lock yourself in the studio or the shed until it is over.

What other projects are you working on at the moment?
There are a couple of things in the pipeline.  Bittereinder is also writing a new album and I can tell you the rough tracks are sounding great!
